His collaborations include working with experts in early identification of epilepsy, neurosurgery, automated suicide classification, machine-learning exploration of spiritual needs, the language of depression, and childhood sexual abuse.

Cheryl's research and clinical expertise is centered around improving quality of care and developing novel treatment interventions for patients in psychiatric crisis.  She is focused on patient centered outcomes research to develop interventions to enable patients to connect with appropriate follow-up care after psychiatric crisis and the development of novel clinical therapeutic tools to treat patients in crisis.

John is the Rachel Upjohn Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences in the Department of Psychiatry, Founder and Executive Director of the University of Michigan Depression Center, Founding Chair, National Network of Depression Centers, and Research Professor in the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute. He served as Chair of Michigan’s Department of Psychiatry from 1985 to 2007 when he stepped down to focus on directing the Depression Center and developing the NNDC.
